The build-up of alluvial sediments, molluscan and palynological evidence, and the physical changes to the river and floodplain are all described and related to human activities at the site, such as clearance and agricultural schemes. The volume concludes with a history of the changing riverscape from the 8th millennium BC to the 2nd millennium AD and broader conclusions regarding the physical and biological setting are made.
